Description: Junya Yano, the former head of the Komeito Party, is back in court. Last month, he filed a lawsuit against the lay Buddhist organization Soka Gakkai and several of its leaders, claiming he has been threatened with physical violence in connection with his work as a political commentator. The Komeito Party is the forerunner of the current New Komeito Party, which is the political arm of Soka Gakkai. Yano publicized his claims in an article in the May 22 issue of the weekly magazine Shukan Shincho. One of the defendants has countersued Yano as well as the publisher, Shinchosha, and the magazine's editor-in-chief for libel. This is Yano's second trip though the legal system in connection with libel claims. In a 2005 Shukan Gendai article he claimed that three former New Komeito representatives forced him to hand over notebooks from his days in the Lower House. Last December, in deciding the resulting libel case, the Tokyo District Court ordered Yano, the editor and the publisher of Shukan Gendai to pay 6.6 million yen in damages to the three men. Yano was elected to the Lower House in 1967 and was secretary-general of Komeito until 1986 and then chairman until 1989. He ended his political career in 1993. At this press conference, Yano intends to present his side of the current controversy.
